Just got back from 'The Painted Veil'. A great movie based upon the novel by W. Somerset Maughan.
It was lovely. A period piece. Set during one of my favorite eras- the 1920's. (I'm sure I lived another life during this time). If you haven't seen 'The Painted Veil', go. It had all the elements I find attractive: The right era, medicine, exotic countryside, nobility, love, death, and all the angst and joy found in between. A bit like another favorite of mine, 'Out of Africa'.
It is very rare that I am able to indulge myself in an afternoon matinee on the weekend. I am surrounded by boys. The mother of all boys-- (even our beloved Mojo-The-Wonder-Dog has a penis)-- means weekends filled with soccer games, sleep overs and constant activity. *sigh* Today, the men in my life took off in different directions-- leaving me in a unique Saturday situation--- A DAY ALL TO MYSELF! Please don't get me wrong. I love my family. But, to have a day to myself felt intoxicating and strange. Imagine... free reign over flick selection, (i.e, no discourse about whether it should be an Action/Adventure or something that would actually engage brain cells)... well, it's downright luxurious for moi.
The movie had one particular line in it that resonated -- "When duty meets love, there is grace within." I thought about all the instances in my life where I chose to do the 'right thing'-- not because I should, but because I couldn't imagine my heart going in any other direction. And, it occurred to me how it was nothing short of grace that led me. I'm fortunate to have had those very rare occasions in my life.
How many of us experience grace in duty?

Sometimes, it is the hardest choice, but the only choice we can make.
I have had those times...
